Beacon Hill is one of the most desirable and prestigious neighborhoods in Boston. The charm of Beacon Hill comes from its cobblestone streets, old row-houses, and its prime location between the Boston Common and the Charles River. The Massachusetts State House stands boldly at the top of Beacon Hill and is a symbol for not only Boston and Massachusetts government, but for this historic neighborhood. Beacon Hill's attractions include the Esplanade and the DCR Hatch Memorial Shell, the Museum of African American History, the Park Street Church, and the John Adams Courthouse. Beacon Hill has a rich history and was home to many literary and historical figures including Louisa May Alcott, John Hancock, Robert Frost, and John Singleton Copley. Today, Beacon Hill is home to professionals, families, and students of nearby colleges like Suffolk University. Beacon Hill's main street, Charles Street, separates the Boston Common and the Public Garden and travels through the neighborhood's center past Charles Station along the river to the West End and Science Park. Charles Street is home to small boutiques and shops with handmade crafts, clothing, and novelty items, as well as cafes, restaurants, pubs, bakeries, and small groceries. Public transportation is accessible via the red line train from Charles/MGH station or Park Street Station, the green line train at Park Station and Government Center, the blue line at Government Center and State Street, and the orange line at State Street.
